Overview:
A leading Northern California nut processor is seeking a Controller to join its leadership team. This position is responsible for overseeing the company's accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and internal controls, while maximizing return on financial assets through the establishment of effective financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems. Working closely with the CEO, Plant Director, and key stakeholders, the Controller provides financial leadership, safeguards company assets, supports operational decision-making, and contributes to the company's profitability and long-term growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Financial Management & Reporting
  • Execute and manage salaried payroll and maintain oversight of hourly plant employee payroll processing in collaboration with the Plant Director.
  • Manage accounts payable to ensure timely processing and payment.
  • Manage the accounts receivable schedule and provide monthly updates in conjunction with the Logistics Team.
  • Oversee grower payments and support grower payment processes and procedures through the company's Nutstar product tracking system in collaboration with the Grower Relations Representative.
  • Maintain working knowledge of grower contracts and provide oversight in conjunction with the Grower Relations Representative.
  • Guide financial decisions through effective financial policies and procedures.
  • Protect company assets through effective internal controls.
  • Monitor financial condition through internal audits and provide information to external auditors as required.
  • Maximize returns and minimize risk through sound cash and product management.
  • Prepare budgets by establishing schedules, collecting and analyzing financial data, and providing recommendations to support fiscal decision-making.
  • Collect, interpret, and report financial information, including the preparation of financial statements and reports for monthly board / ownership meetings.
  • Build and maintain relationships with banking and financial partners, ensuring timely reporting and compliance with GAAP.
  • Coordinate with independent third-party accounting firms in the preparation of annual financial statements and compilation reports.
  • Prepare special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends related to cost of production.
Operations & Strategic Support
  • Collaborate with the Plant Director and Operations Support to identify opportunities for margin enhancement and operational efficiencies, with a focus on maximizing returns.
  • Monitor and analyze inventory and supply levels, working closely with the Plant Director and CEO to maximize efficiency and profitability.
  • Develop crop lien procedures in collaboration with the Grower Relations Representative.
  • Work closely with the CEO and Plant Director to develop and maintain long-term strategic planning, including potential expansion initiatives.
Compliance & Administration
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with federal, state, and local financial and regulatory requirements by monitoring legislation, anticipating changes, enforcing adherence, filing required reports, and advising management on necessary actions.
  • Collaborate with outsourced HR agencies and/or the CEO regarding HR-related matters and compliance with human resources policies and regulations.
  • Manage, organize, and communicate insurance changes necessary for the facility and staff, while evaluating insurance vendor contracts to maximize feasibility.
  • Protect company operations by maintaining the confidentiality of proprietary financial information, plans, and processes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Ability to work weekends as necessary, particularly during the harvest season.
Qualifications and Skills Include:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • 3 -10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting, corporate finance, budgeting, payroll administration, auditing, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, financial software, and payroll systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial information, develop budgets and forecasts, and improve business processes.
  • Agriculture industry experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with ownership, employees, growers, financial institutions, auditors, and other stakeholders.
  • Bilingual English-Spanish desirable.
Compensation:
This position offers a competitive starting salary of $110 - $135k, depending on experience and qualifications, with bonus potential. In addition, this position offers, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as paid vacation, sick leave, holiday pay, and 401k retirement contribution.
